About the expert
Namaste. 🙏🏽 My name is Govinda Dhakal. I was born and raised in Nepal, in a small farming village outside Pokhara. Now I live in the Netherlands, with Valerie and our children. But home, that remains Nepal.
I've been bringing people together my whole life. First as a child, with a board game in my village. Later with my outdoor shop in Kathmandu. After that, together with Valerie, I built my own team in Nepal, of local, hospitable experts who know the mountains through and through. And now, with our small-scale travel organisation By Mountain People, we together are that bridge between you and my home country Nepal. And that is what I love doing most of all.

Recent trips
October 2025, right in the middle of high season, I was guiding a group through the Annapurna region when an unexpected snowstorm threatened to block our route. Within a single morning, we scrapped the plan. On the other side of the mountains, in the snow shadow, we were still able to make a wonderful walk. Not long after, it turned out that groups who had decided to wait were snowed in for days and had to be evacuated by helicopter.
Fondest memory
Last winter, I took my two children to Nepal for the first time. They met their Nepalese family and saw with their own eyes where I come from. We of course did a few hikes and even a multi-day trek, in the depths of winter. Watching the sunrise with them, in the cold, at that altitude: that was magical.
